Thanks for speaking to me on the phone this afternoon, and for your
suggestion about T.E.I. centres
To summarise, I was wondering if you could help spread the word among
mechanical engineers in Greece that we are looking for teams for a new
enginneering TV show which will be shown on The Discovery Channel. The
aim of the programme is to show how fun, exciting and imaginative
engineering and machines can be.
The show is called 'Ultimate Machine Combat' and it is a competition
between teams of designers / engineers / mechanics and drivers from
round the world. The emphasis is on the fun of engineering, solving
problems and working as a team. We've had hundreds of applications from
teams all round the world ranging from rocket scientists to skilled
enthusiasts from local motorcycle clubs. We are very keen to have a team
from Greece in the show. The website below has details about the show
and how to apply.
www.ultimatemachinecombat.com
We're looking for people of all ages (over 18) who are keen engineers /
mechanics / drivers, to get together in teams of 3 and build exciting
and original vehicles to compete around a specially designed arena. The
competition will test the versatility, durability and clever design of
the vehicles as well as the skills and character of the team members!
The idea is that the vehicle has been ingeniously built from old parts
of machinery, and whatever can be bought with the 2000 pounds (3269.38
Euros) which we give to the team.
For legal reasons we can't let the teams keep the vehicle after the
competition. Fortunately this has the added effect of discouraging
people from taking the easy route of spending lots of money on new parts
for their machine, so the competition becomes more about the ingenuity
and skill of the team members.
All expenses will be paid for the team, including travel to the arena in
South East England and accomodation, plus 2000 pounds sterling (3269.38
Euros) towards building the vehicle. All logistics and cost of
transporting the vehicle etc will be taken care of by us.
The machine building phase will take place during May/June (most teams
are building during a couple of weekends). The actual competition rounds
will take place during July / August. (there are 3 rounds in total for
those teams that make it through to the final)
To apply, all you need to do is fill out one of the application forms
from the website for each of the 3 members of your team and make a quick
video of yourselves making some very simple object together. (one team
made a small drill - powered winch, another team made a catapult for
throwing logs!). Applications need to be in by March 15th, though that
date is fairly flexible if we know an application is on the way. (NB the
deadline currently on the website is wrong)
